Background of the study
The evolution of education has brought about diverse approaches to teaching and learning. Traditional learning methods, which rely heavily on textbooks, lectures, and direct teacher-student interaction, have been the dominant mode of instruction in secondary schools. However, with the increasing adoption of technology in education, gamified learning approaches have gained popularity. Gamification involves integrating game mechanics and principles into educational activities to enhance student engagement and motivation (Deterding et al., 2024). This method leverages the natural appeal of games, such as rewards, challenges, and competition, to foster deeper learning experiences.

In Katsina Local Government Area, secondary schools are exploring how gamified learning approaches can complement or even outperform traditional methods in improving student engagement, learning outcomes, and retention. This study will compare the effectiveness of gamified learning against traditional learning approaches in secondary schools, examining factors such as student engagement, academic performance, and motivation.

Statement of the problem
Traditional teaching methods have been effective in delivering content to students, but with the rise of digital technologies, engagement levels have become a growing concern. Gamified learning approaches have the potential to address this issue, but many schools in Katsina Local Government Area still primarily rely on traditional methods. This study aims to evaluate the impact of gamified learning on student engagement and academic performance, comparing it with traditional teaching approaches.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare the impact of gamified learning approaches and traditional learning methods on student engagement in secondary schools in Katsina.

  2. To assess the academic performance of students using gamified learning approaches versus traditional learning methods in Katsina secondary schools.

  3. To identify the benefits and challenges of implementing gamified learning in secondary schools in Katsina.

Research questions

  1. How does gamified learning compare to traditional learning in terms of student engagement in secondary schools in Katsina?

  2. What impact do gamified and traditional learning approaches have on students’ academic performance in Katsina secondary schools?

  3. What are the challenges and benefits of implementing gamified learning in secondary schools in Katsina?

Significance of the study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how gamification can enhance student learning and engagement in Katsina Local Government Area. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and school administrators looking to incorporate more interactive and engaging learning strategies.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to secondary schools in Katsina Local Government Area, Katsina State, and compares gamified and traditional learning methods. It does not extend to higher education institutions or other types of learning approaches outside secondary education.
